Accidents and death

Clinical bottom line

This pages contains a substantial amount of information on different aspects of life, and the rates at which they occur. Our own lifestule choices - smoking, drinking too much, being overweight - have risks that dwarf risks from accidents, like fire or drowning.

Data sources

There was a large number of data sources, which can be found with the data on a downloadable PDF. They include a range of pieces of information - including some of lifestyle.

What the sources tell us

Several different ways of expressing the risk are to be found - not just risk per year, but, for example, the risk of dying accrding to the number of fairground rides taken.

The biggest risks come from lifestyle issues like smoking and being overweight - lifetime risks of 1 in 2 and 1 in 5 respectively, and alcohol poisoning ia a big risk in Ukraine. These lifestyle risks dwarf risks from fire, or drowning, or transport accidents.

Give us the odds

Table 1 has the information on accidents and risk of dying each year and in a lifetime, for various accidents and in different parts of the world. The presentation usually includes a population basis, meaning the whole population of a country or region. However, in some cases populations of people with a particular feature, like being a smoker, or overweight, can be identified and the specific risk applied.
